Pulling the plug on waste

Tap into Savings, a national water and energy-saving project, has been launched in Coventry. A joint initiative between Waterwise, Global Action Plan, Severn Trent Water, Coventry City Council and the Environment Agency, the six-month project aims to visit and help 2,000 local households reduce water consumption by 15% – saving 94,000 litres of water a day.

Local residents will be offered a range of water-saving products free of charge, from a device that converts a single flush toilet into a dual flush, a showerhead that mixes water with air, tap inserts and a shower timer.

Funded partly by Defra’s Greener Living Fund, Tap into Savings is a two-year national programme which aims to help over 10,000 people across England save water, energy and money.

> One in six people can’t remember the last time they had a bath, according to a consumer survey to mark National Plughole Week – an Oxfam campaign to improve sanitation. Cleaning company Buster’s survey of 3,000 households also reports that 11% of those questioned had removed their family bath in favour of a larger shower.
